Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur City

Kuala Lumpur offers a wide range of accommodation for all categories of tourist. Whether you are backpacking with a group of friends or travelling with family you can find accommodation that best suit your needs. Kuala Lumpur offers over 50,000 rooms in all price ranges. The most popular locations for tourist are KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown areas of Kuala Lumpur.

I have stayed over 60 hotels in Kuala Lumpur over the last 15 years and in this article, I will highlight some of the best neighbourhoods to stay and best hotels to pick in various price ranges.

When booking a hotel for a holiday in Kuala Lumpur, keep the following priorities in mind:

  • Prices $$
  • Distance from major attractions
  • Rating of the hotel ( 4 Star, 3 Star)
  • Size of the room
  • Facilities offered by the hotel
  • Breakfast included in the price
  • Hotel Reviews
  • Age of the hotel - (When was the hotel built)
  • Access to public transport
  • Swimming Pool
  • Kids entertainment Room
  • Restaurants

Here are some of the nice options in most touristy areas:

Booking a Hotel in KLCC

Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) is home to Petronas Towers and a large number of high-end hotel chains. This area is very popular with executives and business travellers for its easy access to offices, CBD area of KL and other top-end bars, restaurants and nightlife.

Some of the highly recommended hotels where I have stayed in KLCC are :

  • Traders Hotel   by Shangrila is adjacent to KLCC Suria and KLCC Park
  • Mandarin Oriental  ideally located right next to KLCC Suria and Petronas Twin Towers
  • Fraser Residence  located at walking distance from Petronas Twin Towers and popular spots like Beach Club
  • Concorde Hotel  ideally located right next to Light Rail train station and two stops from Bukit Bintang
  • Hotel Maya  - Located close Jalan Ampang area

Major attractions in KLCC include Petronas Twin Towers, KLCC Suria Shopping Mall, KLCC Aquarium, Menara KL with KL Mini Zoo, Hard Rock Cafe (right next to Concorde Hotel) and KL Eco-Forest.

My favourite hotel in KLCC

I personally like the Concorde hotel  because of its reasonable prices and top-quality service. Concorde offers one of the best breakfast in Kuala Lumpur 4-star hotels. With advance booking rates under US$ 60 a night, Concorde is an ideal choice. There are two restaurant on-premises, a massive swimming pool on the second floor, massage place and a bar with live music over the weekend nights. I highly recommend this hotel for single and family stay.

Hotels in Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur

Bukit Bintang is the heart of nightlife, shopping and eating out in Kuala Lumpur. This area is very popular with middle-eastern tourist in particular as some of the best shopping centres and restaurants are located in Bukit Bintang. Popular food street Jalan Alor and Jalan Ramlee are located in Bukit Bintang. Changkat Bukit Bintang has a large number of bars and clubs.

A steady flow of tourist all through the night to the massage parlours around Changkat Bukit Bintang makes it a popular hangout till late hours of the day. Some of the best continental food restaurants and middle-eastern restaurants in KL are located in Bukit Bintang

Best Serviced Apartments In Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Street and Chinatown

Chinatown is popular with budget travellers and this area offers a large number of budget and cheap hotels very close to some of the busiest areas in the city.

Petaling Street is located in front of Kasturi Walk and Central Market which attracts a large number of crowds throughout the year. Merdeka Square and Abus Samad Masjid are located at a walking distance from this interesting location.

When travelling by myself I have stayed on Petaling street. The hotels are cheap but furnished with all basic amenities. You can get a good quality room under RM 60 per night.

Walking around this neighbourhood and exploring the city on foot is a great way to learn more about the rich culinary and cultural history of Kuala Lumpur.

Bangsar Village Area

Bangsar is one of my favourite neighbourhoods because it is uptown and modern lifestyle and a number of quality eateries and shopping malls. Bangsar is at a distance of 15 minutes cab ride from Bukit Bintang.

Catering to an affluent segment of KL population, Bansgar is popular with ex-pats and people preferring more westernized lifestyle. The shopping malls and the choice of food in the shopping areas reflect that choice. Bangsar is predominantly a residential neighbourhood, unlike Bukit Bintang and KLCC.

Here are some of the interesting places to visit in Bangsar:

  • Bangsar Mall
  • Bangsar Village
  • Mid-City Mall
